FAQ

Who is eligible for OMEA services?
Students from populations that are historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education and who have financial need are eligible for OMEA services. This includes primarily students who are African American , Latino/Hispanic American, Native American, or Asian American, and who are United States citizens or permanent residents. New York State residents–regardless of ethnicity–who are accepted for the New York State Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) or the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) are also eligible for OMEA services.

How do I sign up for OMEA services?
Eligible students may elect to participate in OMEA programs in one of two ways:
1) A student whom has self identified himself or herself as a minority student through the admission process will receive a mailing from our office during the summer before their freshman year begins. Enclosed in the mailing will be a “COSEP Repsonse Form”. Filling out such form will enroll the student in our database for future services.
2) New and continuing students can visit the OMEA in 100 Barnes Hall to register for participation in our services.

Do I have to register with OMEA every semester or academic year?
No. Enrollment in our services only needs to be done once while you are a student at Cornell.

What are the OMEA’s expectations of the students who participate in its services and programs?
The OMEA expects that all participating students will avail themselves fully of the academic and administrative services provided by both the OMEA and their schools and colleges, as well as those provided by the Learning Strategies Center. (Cornell graduates who were OMEA participants report that their academic achievement at Cornell was significantly enhanced by thier participation in the support services provided by these offices.)
